Ross Turpin – Featured Artist of the Week.

After reading the gripping short stories of Will Edgcumbe on his blog “The Lightness of being Dexter Douglas” which details his collection of stories entitled “The Antique Shop” I happend upon young Ross Turpin’s work, god only knows what he does with his day to day life but harping on that would leave you less time to explore his illustrations on his Flickr Stream.
His illustrations are almost magical; he explorest he finer details of some popular imagery in the hardcore “scene”, images of the sea, pirate ships and cunning usage of sloganeering. What impresses me most about Ross’ work is that he moves past this possibly pop – art style and into a space which he owns.
The colouring on his illustrations is so vivid; the integration of electric blues and sharp reds makes for a vivid – visual – experience.

What I find most interesting about his work is that he knows how to use negative space to full effect; often times a daunting task for young artists – like young poets. Saying less is sometimes more!
His characterisation, and use of simple lines to display features and or emotion is spot on, again utilzing a simple stroke of his illustrators pen / brush he creates characters which appear caught whilst not being watched.
Kudos to you Ross! I wish you all the sucess you deserve.
