Taco Zulu in Durban | Restaurant Review

Writing this review of Taco Zulu in Durban both excites and saddens me. For two very different reasons, I’m excited to tell you about one of my favourite things about living in Durban, this city I’ve learnt to call home. I’m saddened that I cannot call Taco Zulu my work space – I’d love to sit at Taco’s all day and do my work from their top balcony.
One of Taco Zulu’s best features is having the location down pat, it’s in the most vibrant of places found in Durban – Florida Road. The little Mexican / surfer themed restaurant of my choice offers a menu to die for, a balcony looking over Florida Road, a decked outside area for the summer days, delicious cocktails (that could possibly be a little bit more potent in my alcoholic opinion), and very funky decor.
I think the number one reason I choose Taco Zulu over every other choice in the long list of restaurants in Durban is because of their atmosphere. Here you will find the true characteristics of Durbanites, right down to their board shorts, slops and collared shirts – nowhere else would you find this!
Taco Zulu sports free wireless, strong filter coffee, very sexy geeky surfers running the place and bathrooms full of grafitti art and photographs of good times previously had.

Er, what about the food? hehe
Food? Shebee do you eat there? HeBee poses a good point
Okay, dudes – how much do you want to know exactly*?
“The little Mexican / surfer themed restaurant of my choice offers a menu to die for, …” I always have the chicken enchiladas – they’re too nice for their price.
Besides, Vince don’t you act all nonchalant – you sat there with me the last time, so you know just how good the place is
HeBee, I like your name dude. Call me.
* Okay, sorry – i got distracted a bit when I did the review. Food gets 5 stars from me. If you’re into Mexican you’ll dig it too.
It’s the kind of place you think you’re going for lunch then end up chilling there for five hours (good company definitely helps
)They have these incredible stencils on the back of the chairs which I loved (especially the one of Mandela wearing a sambrero) and the portions were incredible – breakfast, lunch and dinner in one
and the cocktails were brilliant!

Well as an ex-patriot of Durban and frequenter of Taco i used to get really bummed with the lack of atmosphere there sometimes. The food portions are rather small but it still tastes really good. Stating this however Taco does pump whenever there is a surf industry party there and i have been to plenty of those and wondered the streets of Florida drunk out of my skull in search of street kids to argue with. I would probably say the best things at Taco are the cocktails as they are huge and make you get your buzz on! There is also some pretty ladies there which is always good, especially for dirty men like me
This place royally sucks! I must be plain in saying that as the need for waiters that are meant to enrich the attempt at a flavored atmosphere ruined the whole experience leading us to walking out after having to wait over 20 minutes for a capucinno and coffee.
This is not rocket science .. anyways, moving onto the place next door.
