Baby Scream!, currently based in Argentina, was formed in 2001 by Juan Mazzola. The name Baby Scream “was a mixture of things but basically it represents (in my head) a baby’s fear while being born. The scream and all the crying you know, I associate this to the fear of being alive. In a way I was also thinking about the primal scream theory of psychotherapy but I realise this years after. I wasn’t aware of such a thing…”
He started making music “because I was in love with a girl and I wanted to impress her, I was 13 years old and I couldn’t play a sport because I was way too stupid so [music it was]
Apart from John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison being major influences, Paul Westerberg, The Jayhawks, Dylan, Cheap Trick, Marc Bolan “also inspire him. He continues “I like songwriters, people telling stories. I love all kinds of music, Jazz, Rock and Roll, Heavy Metal, you name it. [I’ve] been listening to a lot of Charleston now.”
He travelled extensively around Europe to promote the EP, Monsters and thought “It was ok, but sometimes it was a fucking nightmare. The Monsters thing in the end it was a good thing, I was expecting more of it but I wasn’t thinking clear enough, it was only an EP. Anyway, those shows were great and I got to meet a lot of cool people in Germany and the U.K.”
The impact of sometimes living in the U.K., Argentina, and in the U.S on his touring schedule makes it “really complicated, I am trying to establish myself somewhere because I am really tired, I feel like a ping pong ball! To be honest the touring wasn’t that organized, this is why I ended up doing so many acoustic shows, in a way I was always on my own.”
Juan is about to release “a new mini L.P. called “Identity Theft” is going to be released in the U.S. through Recorded Recordings Records, they were the same people behind “Ups and Downs”It features 8 songs, 5 songs I did in L.A. and 3 songs I did in Buenos Aires. [Funnily enough] there are 3 different producers on the cd-also, it seems there will be a 7” release very soon so I keep my fingers crossed about this. I will be recording a new cd in January in L.A. called “Baby Scream..”
Recording the new LP was “very cool, Muddy is a genius and I love L.A. so it was the perfect situation, plus he was one of my heroes when I was younger, an unbelievable musician and a great guy. Sometimes it was complicated because I didn’t have a car so he had to drive me home late at night and we were kinda tired and drunk…” Off the wall antics whilst in studio included “eating too many cheetos which I hate by the way!”
His favourite track off the LP is “Dead Woman Walking, I wrote this for my grandmother who died earlier this year of a terrible disease, it was a really hard time and I think the song represents the situation very well.”
He recently “did some acoustic shows in Argentina, and thinks “it’s time to go back to the electric thing so I am using hired musicians as well.
He would “would love to recognized in every possible way [musically]…I just want people to say “look at this guy, he can definitely write a song…”
His favourite thing about performing is “When there is silence at acoustic gigs, they are listening to you. Also when people is having fun at electric shows, like in a Friday night or something.” One of the funniest things that happened at a show was “playing in front of 2 people with the whole band, it was 4 guys onstage and 2 guys in the public…
Juan is an artist to watch out for if you are into acoustic/mellow rock type ballads.
