Gabi Goldberg reviews Goldfish at La Med

Submerged Sundays at La Med are the holy grail days of summer cocktails, chilled music and an even more chilled summer vibe. Right? Wrong. Submerged Sundays are anything but with Goldfish at the helm, or at least it wasn’t on the 3rd of January 2010.
It was one of the surprisingly colder days in Cape Town and making our way to La Med, the friend and I were expecting it to be more on the empty side. How wrong we were. Dom from Goldfish had oh so kindly offered me guest list (plus one) to come and check out Submerged Sundays, so we skipped the extremely long queue and headed inside.
Once inside it was evident just how popular this event is as the show had been sold out and it was packed and when I say packed I mean sardines-in-a-tin packed. Needless to say after squeezing our way through the crowd we somehow found ourselves at the front row, which made the experience even more enjoyable as there is nothing like looking backs on hundreds of people so utterly enthralled by the music. The people and the heat were intense, so much so that it La Med was turned into a sweaty madhouse of writhing movement.
Goldfish were on top form (as always) showcasing tracks from their new Remix Album: Perceptions of Pacha Remixed. I’ve never seen DJ’s who looks happier than Dave, who constantly sings along and jams and Dom who has a boyish enthusiasm that shines through. Dom once told me that his favourite thing about performing is “that magical moment when everything comes together on stage and the crowd, the music and us are all in sync, co-creating a moment which can never be repeated the same way again…” This is one of the reasons why they are one of the hottest jazz/electro duos this side of the equator.
After Goldfish had played DJ extraordinaire Ryan Dent and DJ X-Ray took over the decks. They too played an amazing set, albeit to much less of the crowd. We then took the opportunity to check out the VIP area (which was awesome as there were no queues). We chatted to Dom for a bit and then went back inside to listen to the two DJ’s who are more than impressive in their own right. All in all it was a hot, sweaty, crazy party-with a capital P.
My bit of advice? If you haven’t checked out the Fishies at La Med yet, make sure you do while you still can.
