Free wireless internet hotspots in South Africa
Posted on 03. Mar, 2010 by Moral Fibre Press Office in Culture, Tech
Are you looking for free wireless internet hotspots in South Africa? I know I was, and it took me a little over an hour to aggregate the following information. I do hope this post goes some way to ensuring that you are never short of free wireless internet!
So I’m a bit of a coffee elitist, I require it at least once daily and if it is burnt, or I don’t see a decent head of foam building up aboard my delicious cup then its of no nutritional value whatsoever. There is but only one thing that might ensure my patronage at your restaurant / cafe / hotel / bar should you serve somewhat decent filter coffee, free wireless internet. So on my hunt for free wireless internet in coffee shoppes, bars, hotels etc. I came up with the following list, to which I’d suggest if you know more add them in your comments and I’ll ensure they appear on the mainpage of Moral Fibre.
So you can access free WiFi at the following places :
# Ninos (Rosebank Mall)
# Lulus (Sandton City, Parktown North & Melrose Arch) # Wimpy Rondebosch – 50MB free daily
# Primi Junxion – unlimited free Internet

Nice post, was looking for something like this.
Thanks!
Thanks ismail and adrian. Adrian will add your suggestions to the list
Awesome post. Lulu’s here I come!
Fairly soon every restaurant will have this available and freelances who need a change of scenery will be in heaven
Taco Zulu’s in Florida Road, Durban has unlimited wireless access for free, with excellent coffee too
Sexy waiters included. Just saying…
Awesome SheBee used to be a haunt for me too. Although I must admit I was focused on a glass of coke and not my pc..
On Lulu’s, do keep in mind that Lulu’s in Melrose Arch is closed on Sundays and the internet access at the one in Parktown North is so intermittent, it’s actually never worked when we went. The one at Nino’s in Rosebank is super fast though and the pizza is delicious
Whats so fascinating about a glass of coke?
o_O
The bubbles are hypnotic! Apparently if you mix mentos with Coke you get an explosive mixture; that is your handy hint of the day.
This is a great start to a really useful list. Thanks for the effort in getting it up and running. Once a more comprehensive list is available, let’s start publishing it as much as we can. On the flip side, those providing access may not wish the resultant crowds to be pushing up their bandwidth costs!
Well Arthur – definitely agree with your sentiments – barring one, if you think of the “free – internet” as a ploy to attract visitors then the possible negative offshoot of increased bandwidth will be offset with an increase in patrons? After all uncapped DSL costs R2000, give or take a few grand, even if you as a coffee shoppe attract another 50 patrons its a relatively cheap marketing campaign..right?
only a pleasure!!
The ones you list that offer 20MB free daily in Cape Town are pretty fast. It’s easy though to get uncapped internet at them!
They limit you on 2 variables: Your username and your computers network address (also called MAC address).
Once your 20MB is up, you can quickly register a new username and change your computer’s network address. This way they don’t know that it’s the same person using the same computer!
Here are instructions on how to change your MAC quick-quick for different types of computers: http://www.tech-faq.com/change-mac-address.shtml

Hi there,
Just to announce that we recently completed the installation of RedButton Free WiFi hotspots at all six Sundance Gourmet Coffee Co stores in Cape Town. Each hotspot gives an automated free allowance of 20MB daily and you can use your RedButton account at each store:
1) CBD – 59 Buitengracht street
2) CBD – 25 Church street
3) Mouille Point Village – 18 Bay road, Surrey Place
4) V&A Waterfront – Shop 6, Albert Mall
5) Sea Point – Shop 2, Equinox Building, 154 Main rd
6) Green Point – Cape Royale Hotel, 47 Main Road
Kind Regards,
Nico
PS: A comment on an anonymous post on attempting to circumvent hotspot security measures, this is no different to attempting to circumvent paying for your meal or coffee.
McDonalds Rivonia (Rivonia Rd & 7th Ave) is also free, plus they open at 6:30am should you need to email very early while having breakfast.
what about any free wifi hotspots in bloemfontien. much apriciated

Hi guys when you go to the Mugg , and want to use the net for 10 mins, select the complimentary 10 access on the landing page on the left hand side, this will allow you access for 10 mins.
Thanks
Derek

one other question can you use the mac address spoofing method to get extra minutes?
ill try jus now with an ipod touch. and then see whats happening will get back at you
oh anyone who is in bloemfontein, and wants free wifi in bloemfontein
there is one resturant in logh logan called taumari and they have free internet
lol y wouldn’t he? who is derek?
i wanna find out that answer before i tell youu what happened with the mac spoofing
I think Derek is from one of the service providers. I think perhaps even from one of Moral Fibre’s kind sponsors.
stupid mug and bean!!! te internet wasn’t working today here in bloemfontein! i took my laptop there and it connected but it just didn’t wanna go to the landing page! i used it last week but today it didn’t work! i even tried with my ipod touch i jus didn’t wanna work!!! aaaahhh
is there like a data limit to the hotspots or something?? y didn’t it allow me to use it!!!
even last week friday went to the resturant at taurmari and i jus couldn’t get good receiption so it kept bumming out so i couldn’t connect!!! y is it every time i try to connect to wireless hotspots it doesn’t allow me!!!
no man this is the first time i went to mug and bean with my laptop but it didn’t connect! and the manager couldn’t even help!
oh ok but hope next time ill b able to connect! thoght maybe it was mac flitering but when i put my orignal mac address it didnt work!
Morning guys, I believe the Muggs site was down for about 10 mins just before 9h00 yesterday morning, dryburn.macbook I would be interested to find out the outcome of the MAC address spoofing
hey guys im in jhb and havent had any time to find some networks but i found one!!!! yippie maybe i should make my own site with a list of free wifi networks!!! lol just kidding! but thanks a lot vince
so i was waiting for a who works t SABC studios so i was waiting with an other friend so i pulled out my mac just to show him a video then my mac automatically join the network!
it only works inside the building, even if your right outside it doesn’t work
well im basically stuck at my friends place so i cant go find or go to the mall to join networks.
oh and by the way the outcome of the mac spoofing, it worked with an ipod touch when i first tried at mug and bean but i cant get to the landing page so cant see if it still works, will have to see when i get back to bloem
yea within sabc
hey people i sat at the mall using mug and beans internet for like 2 hours! yea mac spoofing works. and is really simple to use. tell me if u want to find out more ill send u an email if u ask
This is very interesting, I wonder dryburn.macbook why don’t you post the how to on this forum? I’m interested to see how this all works. You’re clearly anonymous and I’m not going to ‘out’ you.
hey i wrote like a really long reply dont no y it didn’t show up… dam i forgot what i said
My bad there, we switched hosts and some of the files disappeared when i uploaded them so i have had to disable the ‘reply’ option for now..
oh ok well dam did u read wat i sadi or it didnt send at all???
nope it didn’t save at all – pretty weird actually. I think the site was probably refreshing just as you hit send.
My apologies! Why don’t you see if you can back it up on your side – I always find a good cup of coffee is pretty much Ctrl + F5′s equivalent.
so i picked up like 15 wifi hotspots in knysna but i couldnt connect to them because the signal was extremely weak and i couldnt pick up the source. but any know of free wifi hot spots in knysna or plet?
Damn that sucks! I’ve asked around and come up rather blank, did you find anything out yet?
hi dryburn,
just arrived in SA from Sweden (where pretty much every bar/cafe/hotel has ‘near free’ internet) and quite chocked by the prices and unavailability here (now surfing on a vdfne card for 189rand for 500mb) so if you could enlighten me how to surf for free on the 10-minute limited networks it’d be very much appreciated!
Greetings,
Dutch
dpsberlijn@hotmail.com
you might mistaken vince!! very much mistaken!!! they trying to fork out as much money as they can before the fiber optic cables are launched!
Sandton Lodge Boutique Hotel in Rivonia, has free ASDL to thier rooms and free un-capped wirless hot spots on the property internet very fast
Not really a free service, but the company 2 floors above where I work has an unsecured wireless network, which I may or may not have used in the past when our office connection was down.
It’s been 6 months since the last update. Anyone found any more hotspots with free unlimited internet access??
Thanks. Gonna look at doing this at JB’s.
@Nico de Wet, Thanks for the updates Nico! Yeah we one hundred percent agree with your views on circumnavigating wireless internet hotspots – in the interests of keeping this dialogue as open as is possible I’ll leave the comment be.
Thanks again, cheers for now.
@dryburn.macbook, will spread the word that you’re looking and get back to you hopefully with an answer. If there is a Dros in the area, they generally have free Wifi. Also try Ninos, Capellos, Cafe Dulce, Lulus and or Vida e caffe as they generally have free wireless in store.
@vince, thanks a lot. yea free internet should b available every where
@dryburn.macbook, sure thing all you need to do is switch your wireless on. Go to whichever browser you use, navigate to any page and hit refresh. You should be prompted with a wi – fi landing page.
@dryburn.macbook, Hmm thats a wee bit strange – I know that you get it at some spots. Is there not a link which says “free trial” on the page, thats how I accessed it at Seattle Coffee Shop.
@Derek, Awesome thank you Derek. Nice one for watching this thread and adding new info as and when you have it!
@dryburn.macbook, if only you knew how funny your reply to derrik is
Hint : Remove foot from mouth.
I’m sure if my assumptions are correct that someone like derrik might not appreciate attempts to “get extra minutes”.
@dryburn.macbook, as far as I’m aware you should have no issues connecting to hotspots – maybe they’re on to you and your sneaky tactics. haha.
Cool to see you dropping by, thanks for coming back.
Would you mind compiling a list of spots in Bloem which you find with free WI – Fi ? I’ll add them to the ever growing list.
@dryburn.macbook, it happens – it’s not clock work dependable especially if they’ve just started making it available, not enough towers – if one has a glitch youre screwed.
@dryburn.macbook, Ah nicely done – so within the SABC building you get free wireless?
I’ve recently got an iphone so I might stumble upon more free wireless sites as I walk about the malls / city and the rest of Jozi.
So another spot gets added to the list.
@dryburn.macbook, yeah!
robbiek1234@gmail.com
Where are abouts are you staying? If you’re on MSN, I’ll chat to you there too as this will save you some of that 3g bandwidth!
The free 10 minutes is generally at Mugg and Bean or Exclusive Books and is dependant on the available wi – fi supplier. Let me find out from Internet Solutions how it all works and they’ll sort out some form of instruction manual.
For now try to find the nearest Lulus coffee shoppe and you’ll have unlimited free internet.
Hi Dutch, just dropped you a mail as per Vinces comment
Looks like you’ve been sorted out already! Internet Solutions Rocks!
Nice one Derek!
Awesome thanks George for the tip! Really helps us a hell of lot to compile an even greater list and get everyone online and well on moral fibre
