Adventureland

A movie about an amusement park! It has Bill Hader in it! This is going to be so awesome.

But it’s not. The problem is that the central characters (James and Em) are about as interesting as dry mud (not the kind with grass in it). The only comic relief is provided by Bill Hader. Yes, he’s funny, but he’s not funny enough to carry this entire ‘comedy’ on his shoulders. Don’t watch this unless you think Kristen Stewart is the hottest thing ever. Then watch it by all means. But always be aware that movies like this are slowly sucking the life force out of your body as you watch. They’re draining the very parts of you that make you human (i.e. the ability to love). As you lie before your television set, an empty husk of the person you used to be, a man wearing only a toga on his head will break through your window. He will stand over your shivering, mentally decomposing form, and he will take away the remnants of your dignity with two words, “Matrix sequels”.

You have been warned.

  1. I enjoyed Adventureland, but then I never saw it as a comedy. As a light romantic drama, with a little humour thrown in it was pretty good. Anyone going into it expecting a comedy, perhaps due to the presence of Reynolds and Hader, is setting themselves up for disappointment.

  2. I agree with Steve – I quite enjoyed it, but I definitely didn’t approach it as a comedy film. I didn’t think it was a great film – at all, but it was enjoyable.

    • You are both entitled to your opinions… for now. Once I rule the earth, I will have people that like Adventureland drawn and quartered. That’s right gentlemen. Drawn and quartered.

Let us put this aside though. Let us instead agree that the upcoming Invictus will be amazing.

  3. I’m certainly prepared to give it a chance, even though I hate rugby. The only other rugby movie I’ve ever watched is Bakgat, which received an unenthusiastic thumbs-up; only because it was refreshing to see the same tired old high school drama theme in a local milieu. Oh and because I thought Cherie van der Merwe was moerse cute.
