Wang Thai (Sandton City) – A restaurant review

I have two dreams. One is to write the next great South African novel. The second, to eat at a restaurant with the word ‘wang’ in it’s name. On Tuesday night, my second dream came true.

Brace yourself, here’s a restaurant review.

First of all, the tables. They are padded. This is genius. If you have finished your meal and you need a little snooze just shift your plate forward and settle down for a nap. This is so genius I will be lobbying management to replace all our hard wooden desks with nice padded ones.

Second, the food. It’s great. It tastes really nice, which is a good thing for a restaurant with the word ‘wang’ in its name. It’s really well priced too. How often have you eaten at a restaurant and wondered why there are serial numbers next to all the items on the menu? That won’t happen here.

But it can’t all be roses and moonshine right? True. So what is the essential ingredient missing from this Thai establishment? I will tell you. Thai people. There are no Asian people there at all. It’s kind of like Hiroshima on August 7, 1945.

Anyway, book, eat, swoon. Phone this number (011) 784 8484. Say, “I want to eat outside!”

  1. This is one of my favourite restaurants! The food is always amazing, service is great PLUS my first *and* second dream came true there. first – the love of my life and I found our way to each other at that restaurant… and secondly, I saw JZ’s brother there. If it’s good enough for JZ’s brother, it’s good enough for me!

  2. This restaurant review is great – the really nice bit is the core of the review which talks about the food: “It’s great. It tastes really nice.”

Good luck with your many future reviews, Craig!

  3. Thanks Roger. I usually don’t mention food at all in my restaurant reviews but I thought I’d break the mould. I’m wild and crazy that way. My friends call me “wild man”. Not because of that time that I lived with wolves for 6 months in Alaska, but because I decided to start mentioning food in my restaurant reviews.

  4. I have put this on my list of favourite restaurants too. My first dream will probably not come true here as I find it distracting to write on padded tables. I do not know who JZ is. I am sure he is a nice man with happy feelings inside.

  5. we got a great vs of this in Milnerton too – on the beach!

  6. Ooooooh… wow, that’s pretty. Are the tables padded?

  7. unfortunately not. will enquire next time

  8. That was quite a cool review, can you please do the Spur in Springs!?

  9. Y’know, I haven’t been to Springs in a while. This may be just the excuse I need to take my shoes off, strap on my dungarees and head on out to the far east.
